1992 The core of what was to become Point Pursuit is formed. The group consisted of four guys riding to have fun on rigid Treks and GT bikes. Tom Glenetzke, Greg “Hodag” Pederson, Jim Gilbert and Tony Gindt spent time riding the old dirt single track loop adjacent to the Stevens Point Airport. This trail is now part of our famous “Green Circle” trail. Notable races: The “Thunderdown at the Underdown” (near Irma, WI) and the “Nine Mile Swamp Romp”. The races were mainly double track trails, not much for single track yet. We all rode the Chequamegon 40, there were no issues yet about getting in the race at this point. Hodag passed Tony on Seeley Fire Tower Hill and held him off to the finish. NOTE: Tony wasn’t feeling very well that day, but let’s just say, Hodag hasn’t beat Tony since. 1993 New bikes, new races, new faces this year. Three-tube carbon fiber frames sucked in many around this time. Jim and Tony were doing a whole lot of jaw-jacking on the benefits of Softride suspension stems. That technology went out the window just like bio-pace chainrings. Tony moved to New Jersey this year but drove back to be with his buddies at the Chequamegon 40. Jim was in really good shape this year and did well. He found his form while doing bike patrols of Standing Rocks Park for the county catching trail pass scofflaws. Notable races: Chequamegon 40, Mudder’s Day (Rhinelander) 1994 Tony moves back to Stevens Point. Jim and Tony decide that they need to form an actual team of riders and have jerseys made. Headwinds bike club folded, but these guys felt that they could keep a group together with as little effort as possible. When Tony asked why his bikes kept breaking all the time, Carl from Campus Cycle simply stated, “You ride with no finesse.” Let’s say that the name of the group could have easily been “No Finesse Racing”. But Jim and Tony somehow hashed this out while consuming adult beverages and came up with “Point Pursuit”. It sounded good. Neither of them even really understood a pursuit type race, but they lived in Point and away you go! Notable races: Chequamegon 40, Mudder’s Day, WORS schedule including Philips, Nine Mile, Sayner
